See the four yupa on Jasper cylinder seal. The top चषालः caṣāla is shaped like a vajra :)-- hour-glass octagonal shape like the vajra held by vajrapani.
I suggest that the octagonal shape is linked to the metal sharp-edged weapon which is sought to be produced in the smelting operations. The octagonal shape is as stipulated in SBr vedic text.

Four flag-posts(reeds) with rings on top held by the kneeling persons define the four components of the iron smithy/forge.
