புள்ளிக் கலாபமயில்---PuLLik KalAba mayil

PuLLik KalAba mayil --- புள்ளிக் கலாபமயில்

rAgam: kAvadic cindu (tune) tALam: Adi

Composer: aNNAmalai reDDiyAr

Background: KAvaDi cindu songs are usually composed with lord Murugan or lord Krishna as the central deity. This particular song is one among several in the compilation of KAvaDic cindu songs of the composer describing the environs around the hills collectively known as kazhugu malai (the abode of lord Murugan).  After invocation songs on lords VinAyaka and Murugan other verses dwell on the foothill town, the temple features, the hillscape and the pond features and more. The entire set of 40 songs (in Thamizh script can be read here). The following verses describe the features of the pond---the flora and the fauna in the region of the pond. It is titled vAvi vaLam (வாவி வளம்) describing the tank/pond/stream that is surrounding the foothills. This song reminds us of a kAvaDic cindu song of  of an earlier time composer UttukkADu VenkaTaKavi which starts as “KaNNan varuginRa nEram…” where the composer describes the flora and fauna along a riverbed which is frequented by Krishna.  You can read about that song   here.

 Now for the song.

Meaning
It is very difficult to decipher the meaning of several words in the song. The meaning given here is an overall one covering most of the features without specific word meanings.

1.     He (lord Murugan) rides the peacock which sports a colorful dotted plumage. He is the darling son of Shakthi. He has twelve strong shoulders and he is wise.
2.     He is the darling of VaLLi. He is the friend of aNNamalai kavi. He dwells in kazhugumalai. Let me tell you the glorious detail about the pond/stream in the area.
3.     When the white stork pecks on the passing fish in the water, the fish jumps up and escapes. Alongside, the coconut palm tree spathe and that of the cactus bend over.
4.     The young female swan and its male mate walk away from each other. They then return to the flower bed and mate.
5.     The male and the female deer get together and fondle each other.
6.     The bee flies around the red lotus flower and hums a tune. It sucks the nectar from the flower and lie around in the flower petals intoxicated with his mate.
7.     The two swans mate with the speed of lightning and swim away in the water.
8.     The fish too jump up from the water and hit each other. The cow on the land thinks of its young one and automatically milk oozes out of its udder.
